Making a movie is a large, multifaceted process, and costuming is just one small part of it. Still, that piece alone takes a lot of work from a lot of different people and departments. First, costumers have to research the period of the movie and find out what’s accurate for the time. They create a costume, and then the director gets to approve or disapprove, and can also add any nuance they desire. Then it’s up to the actors to dress themselves properly, and the hair and makeup team to accurately style the actors. Then there’s a team that has to make sure the actors look the same in every shot, and editors who have to catch anything that those people missed in post-production. Overall, there are countless opportunities for movie costume mistakes to happen, and they’re more common than you might think!
